When Kawii Leonard dunked on Russell Westbrook with a little under four minutes left in the game, it should've ignited the Spurs to seal the Thunder's fate at home. But, it provoked Russell Westbrook to score or assist on the last four baskets including a tough three point play to put San Antonio to sleep 95-91 taking a commanding 3-2 series lead. Early on it was evident OKC came to play, especially the duo of "Fire and Ice" leading them to a 9-2 early lead. The Spurs looked old and lethargic at times appearing to be losing against father time. Kawii Leonard kept his team competitive displaying brilliance on both sides of the court.
Scoring on three consecutive possessions in the hook shot variety a la Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He provided most of the teams energy scoring 15 points in the second quarter as San Antonio led 48-43 at intermission. The Spurs game out guns blazing on a 12-4 run behind the marksmanship of Danny Green to begin the 3rd quarter. The infamous "hero ball" synonymous with OKC seemed to be detrimental once again as the Spurs extending their lead but another sub-plot was unfolding. Steven Adams was flat out whipping the great Tim Duncan on both ends of the court.
His feisty play and hustle points kept the Thunder competitive until "Fire and Ice" started to cook. Going into the fourth it seemed the Spurs would just find a way to win. Danny Green was 6 for 9 from 3 point land finishing with 20 points, hitting crucial shots and it seemed evident. Then OKC's bench stepped up with Waiters and Kanter getting buckets, then before you know its a ballgame going down the stretch. Suddenly the tyrannical tyrant who is Russell Westbrook stuck a knife in the hearts of Spurs fans around America. Finishing with 35 points 11 rebounds and 9 assists showing Mark Cuban their are two superstars in Oklahoma City.
His co-star "Ice" had a quiet but effective 23 points. While Steven Adams had 12 points and 11 rebounds outplaying Tim Duncan who had a sub-par 5 points and 3 rebounds. Leonard led San Antonio 26 points 6 rebounds 5 assist 4 steals. LaMarcus Aldridge chipped in with 20 points on 21 shots, while the combination of Parker and Ginobili went 5 for 16 with 12 points in 51 minutes. With Duncan clearly being outplayed plus Ginobili and Parker being ineffective, has father time taken his place in their careers? Well, they better show up in game 6 or "Fire and Ice" will be in the conference finals facing the Chef and his Warriors.
